Chapter 12:
Introduction to Heroic Myths
318-326
The hero is a universal character. All cultures in all places and in all times tell stories of
men and women who travel far from their homes; encounter strange and wonderful
creatures; face dangers not encountered in everyday life; learn about the
natural world; test the limits of their mental and physical strength; and discover
that they must die. Through these
stories, we learn about mankind’s struggles to separate himself from the
beasts and the baser animal instincts and to
reach for the best in himself.
