Transferring Students

1. Transferring to UNM-Los Alamos

New UNM-Los Alamos students who have attended other colleges may enroll in degree, non-degree (if planning to return to their previous institution where seeking a degree), or unclassified status. Official transcript evaluation is available for students who are enrolling in degree status. Transcripts must be sent from each institution attended. Students should allow one semester for an evaluation to be completed. To have a transcript from another college evaluated, a student should apply for degree status in a UNM-offered program, submit a $10.00 application fee and request that official copies of his/her transcript be sent from all previously attended colleges to the Registrar, UNM-Los Alamos, 4000 University Drive, Los Alamos, New Mexico 87544. For students applying for the next academic session while still enrolled at another institution, the official transcript must include a listing of courses in progress as well as all completed work. An official evaluation of the transcript will be prepared only if the above procedures are followed.

If the applicant is transferring to UNM-Los Alamos with fewer than 26 hours of acceptable college work, the applicant is considered a freshman transfer and must also submit official ACT scores, sent directly from ACT Records, PO Box 51, Iowa City, Iowa 52240, and a complete official transcript of high school work and GED scores if applicable.

Applications will not be processed until all required items are on file with the Registrar's Office.

To allow students at other institutions to make definite plans for transfer, a determination of admission status may be made before courses in progress are completed, subject only to receipt of the final transcript. Students permitted to register before receipt of their final transcripts may be disenrolled if their transcripts do not reach the UNM-Los Alamos Admissions Office within three weeks after the beginning of classes.

Students must indicate on their applications all previous college attendance. Applicantsmay not ignore previous college attendance, even though they may prefer to repeat all previous courses. Students found guilty of non-disclosure or misrepresentation in filling out admission application forms are subject to disciplinary action, including possible dismissal from UNM-Los Alamos.

Academic credits for courses completed at other postsecondary institutions can be transferred to UNM-Los Alamos if:

  • A grade of D or better was earned in the course,
  • The postsecondary institution is appropriately accredited, and
  • UNM or UNM-Los Alamos offers an equivalent course as determined by the appropriate individual(s).

2. UNM Bachelor’s Degrees

Students intending to go to UNM Main Campus to pursue a four-year degree should be aware that many of the necessary prerequisites for main campus degree programs are offered by UNM-Los Alamos. Students are encouraged to work with UNM-Los Alamos advisors to plan their individual programs.

Students are also cautioned that courses listed with a T (e.g., Electronics Technology 101LT) are considered to be technical/vocational courses and are not acceptable for baccalaureate credits except by petition to, and acceptance from, a UNM degree-granting program.

Candidates for undergraduate bachelor’s degrees offered by UNM must meet several all-university minimum degree requirements and are subject to several all-university limitations. These are listed under Bachelor’s Degree Requirements in the section Undergraduate Curriculum and Course Descriptions.

Bachelor’s Degree Requirements
The candidate for any undergraduate bachelor’s degree offered by any of UNM’s colleges must meet several all-university minimum degree requirements and is subject to several all-university limitations:

  1. A minimum of 128 acceptable semester hours of credit must be earned.
  2. A maximum of 24 semester hours of CR/NC credit grading option courses may beapplied toward a bachelor’s degree.
  3. A maximum of 40 semester hours of extension and correspondence (independent study) credit may be applied toward a bachelor’s degree and no more than 30 of these hours may be correspondence credit.
  4. Residence credit requirement: A minimum of 30 semester hours of credit, exclusive of extension and correspondence (independent study) credit, must be earned at UNM main campus or UNM-Los Alamos. Of these 30 hours in residence, 15 semester hours must be earned after the candidate has accumulated 92 hours of earned semester hour credit. These 15 hours, however, do not have to be the last hours of a degree program. A student may fulfill all or part of this residence requirement by attending summer session.
  5. Major and minor residence requirements: At least one-half of the minimum number of credit hours required for major study and one-fourth of the minimum for minor study must be class or laboratory work in residence at UNM Main Campus. The major department of the director of an interdepartmental major may modify this ruling when a senior transfer student plans to complete a major by presenting credit hours earned in residence at another institution. Any modification, however, may not be below one-fourth of the total minimum hours required for the major.
  6. The student must have achieved a cumulative scholarship index of 2.0 or a 2.0 grade point average in the last 128 semester hours of degree work.
  7. A student must demonstrate a minimum competence in writing by passing English 102 or by attaining a suitable score on an authorized proficiency test prior to graduation.

Additional degree requirements for a specific bachelor’s degree will be found in the appropriate college section of the UNM Main Campus catalog.
