Incomplete Grades

The grade of "Incomplete" is given by UNM-Los Alamos faculty only in exceptional cases, when circumstances beyond the student’s control have prevented completion of the work of a course within the official dates of a session.

Removal of Incomplete Grades

No grade except "Incomplete" may be raised by completion of other extra work or by special examination. The student may change the "I" to a passing grade by satisfactorily performing the work prescribed by the instructor in a manner determined by the instructor with the approval of the Associate Director, Branch Academic Services.

The student should make arrangements with the instructor within a reasonable time for the completion of the work required to remove the "Incomplete." It is strongly recommended that this be done within the following semester. After these arrangements have been made, the instructor obtains from the Registrar’s Office a permit form to remove the Incomplete. The instructor then completes the form and returns it to the Registrar’s Office where the Registrar makes the official entry on the student’s record. The removal form must be in the Registrar’s Office by the last day of the appropriate semester.

Students should not re-enroll or reregister (for credit) in a course for which an Incomplete has been received to remove the Incomplete.

If the student is required by the instructor to repeat the class to remove the incomplete, the student must register for the course on an audit basis.

Incomplete grades must be removed by the published ending date of the next semester in residence or within the next four semesters if the student does not reenroll in residence. Students are responsible for making arrangements with the instructor for removal of an "Incomplete". Incomplete grades not removed in accordance with these policies will be converted automatically to a grade of "F"
.
